Sonlight

New Day has been supporting Sonlight Academy in Port de Paix, Haiti for nearly a decade. The Christian English-immersion K-12 school has more than 350 Haitian students, and the Bible college is now training more than 50 students for ministry. Two of our members – Ken and Nancy Horn – are frequent visitors to Sonlight and wrote this report after their most recent visit:

Wonderful things are happening at Sonlight in Port de Paix, Haiti. The graduates are beginning to show up in various roles using their education and spirituality. For example, two graduates have started "free" schools in other parts of the city, and many are teaching or assisting at Sonlight itself. Several are going to college, some in the US. One is a translator for the UN. There are numerous after-school Bible Studies for both boys and girls held in the homes of the Sonlight teachers. We were able to attend one with the high school girls, many of whom we've known since they were in the 2nd or 3rd  grade. What a joy to witness their knowledge of the Scriptures.

The new SonCenter building that New Day has contributed to and our teams have worked on for the past 8 years is nearing completion and will be dedicated this coming October. In addition to housing the Sonlight offices, it provides classrooms for the high school students and Bible College, and will be the new church home for the Sonlight Church. The sanctuary overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and includes a beautiful baptistry. The new building will allow for expansion of the church and Sunday school. There is space set aside for a dental clinic and a kitchen to serve large groups. The building will also be available for community meetings, seminars, and the like.

Four years ago, one of the Sonlight Bible College graduates and one of the teachers at Sonlight, Jon Wessel, planted a new church in the south part of Port de Paix in an area call LaCoupe. The church has had to be moved 3 times as it is growing so quickly. There are 50-60 children attending both the Sunday service and the Wednesday night youth group. They all come eager to learn about Christ and praise the Lord in singing.

Scott Alexander, the son of Sonlight founders Norma and Roger Alexander, has returned to teach at Sonlight. Scott is the director of the Bible College. After receiving his Master of Divinity from Cincinnati Christian Seminary, Scott taught in Haiti for 9 years, then preached in Illinois for 9 years. He is happy to be back in Haiti, right at home at Sonlight. His wife Lindsay teaches fourth grade. Their two elementary-aged boys Cameron and Ethan are enjoying going to school at Sonlight.

The biggest need at Sonlight now is sponsorships for their new teachers, Brad and Sue Hammond from Canton, Ohio. They are new to Haiti this year, but are already becoming fluent in Creole. Brad, a graduate of Kentucky Christian University, teaches Bible in the high school and Bible College. Sue teaches third grade, and is kept busy with her own four kids, who have adapted amazingly well to the Haitian culture. They are a joy to be around.

If you would like to sponsor any of the teachers at Sonlight, please contact Nancy or Ken Horn at 941-661-7099 or at kennancyhorn@hotmail.com. Sponsorship amounts can be tailored to your ability to give. Any amount is a blessing.

The next regularly scheduled mission trip to Sonlight will be in January of 2013.
